Mazda Rx7The Mazda Rx7 is over 20 years old and is the only surviving successful incarnation of German designer Dr Felix Wankel's rotary engine. The design has sporn many efforts from the likes of Citroen, General Motors, Mercedes, Nissan and NSU, but only one remains to this day.. from Mazda. The key difference of the rotary engine design was its use of triangular rotors in lieu of pistons for combustion - resulting in efficiency gains in the domains of space and weight and even smoothness - some say at the cost of long term durability but we consider that later. The Mazda Rx7 was regarded as something special from Mk1 in 1978 all the way to the latest model (preceding the RX-8) the Mk 3 1992 onwards (with variants such as the type R, type S and particularly the Type RS in 1999). The MK3 Mazda Rx7 defined itself as a true sports car, losing its rear seats and increasing its power...Mazda pushed the theme yet further with the tuned variant RS of the car launched in 1999 (-2002) that shed weight and gave a further burst of power. (Specifications and a more thorough review of the car included below). Mazda Rx7 AvailabilityThey are widely available in the UK as Japanese imports, but a clean car is recommended, as they can be quite pricey to repair if and when they go wrong - insist on seeing the auction report if buying an import. Mazda's Rx7 is available in Japan and as a UK import in both manual and automatic form, with the Mk3 (1992 onwards) 5-Speed manual pushing out an impressive 255bhp (its european counterpart giving out 240hp). The very impressive RS form is the most sought after and therefore most expensive (and rare) car of the three versions (S, type R and RS)- and is respected the world over as the "animal" sports breed of the car. Mazda Rx7 Review:Mazda has transformed the rotary engine to an art-form. The complex sequential twin-rotor twin-turbocharged Wankel engine is the star of the show. The Mazda Rx7 is unique with its turbine smoothness and wonderful handling. A true raw sports car of great character that offers its owners pure, unaldulaturated sports car driving. However this raw two seater is not without luxury, the japanese variants usually come with air conditioning, leather seats and an electric roof. The beautifully styled body makes extensive use of aluminium and thermoplastics with lithe curves and even a subtle double bubble roof. Post 95' cars were restyled front and rear, as well as on the inside. These handsome looks and performance come with a fairly thristy disposition and an engine that must be cared for and meticulously maintained . High mileages should be avoided as repairs can be expensive. If buying from an importer, insist on seeing the auction report which should highlight any defects. Automatics are also available from Japan and are very popular.
